To do or not to do

OK... so i always thought those online university things were a bit of a joke. I mean... everybody gets those stupid junk emails from the University of Phoenix... get your degree blah blah blah. But lately i've been hearing alot of ads on the radio for Open Universities Australia. I thought it was some stupid scheme. But i thought i'd check it out, just to see what it was.

Turns out that I can do pretty much any course I want to, each subject runs over 13 weeks, but you can start it at 4 times during the year, so you can do two subjects at once, and work year round and still do a full uni year worth of course within a year... or you can just do a few subjects for interest's sake. And the best part is that you can do it all online. For most subjects you never once have to set foot on a campus.

Thing is, I think i was actually looking for excuses and reasons NOT to go back to uni... but now i'm quite excited at the prospect of getting a communications degree, but not having to stop working...

I guess now the question is, can I handle it all?

Ummmmm ... not to be a party pooper or anything, but I sure hope you've given this some thought.
I reckon you've played right into the hands of such mass marketing, the 0.01% that fall for it.

I have given it quite some thought... and i'm going to start off with one or two subjects and see how it goes.

I still end up with a proper undergraduate degree from Griffith University... so i don't know if it's a matter of "falling" for something. It's a legitimate course that i can even do HECS for if i want to. or Fee help or whatever it's called these days.

i think it sounds like a good idea. i encourage you. im sure it would be lots of work though... how much does it cost?

It's about $600 per subject.... so about $14,000 for an undergraduate degree. but you can do diplomas and stuff as well, and then have them count towards your degree. it all depends on picking your subjects. A couple of the ones i'm looking at are offered by MOnash, but only 1/2 my subjects have to be from Griffith Uni to get my degree from there. BTW i'm looking at Bachelor of COmmunications majoring in Public Relations or Journalism.

can you get credit for your subjects from melbourne? that $600 price tag is the same as a normal uni subject. i presume though, that the cost to them is lower, as its all online!! less staff, less buildings. so they must make more money out of it. but it does sound like a good idea for someone who wants to keep working full time :-)

yeh i think i can get credit for 4 electives... they're the only electives in the whole degree though... and none of the subjects I did really fit for other credit.
